Florentine Allegory – Architecture and Composition in the Early Renaissance
Lecture and Concert with Gerhardt Müller-Goldboom and Vocalconsort Berlin

After St. Peter's in Rome, St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, and Milan Cathedral, Florence Cathedral was the largest church building in 15th-century Europe. Filippo Brunelleschi’s dome was considered a true engineering masterpiece – the largest self-supporting masonry dome in the world. The dedication ceremony on March 25, 1436, was a major regional event. The cathedral’s soaring presence, which continues to shape the city’s skyline today, served as a bold statement of Florence's political identity.

Guillaume Dufay’s motet Nuper rosarum flores was performed for the first time at this occasion, sharing striking structural principles with Brunelleschi’s architecture. In his lecture, Gerhardt Müller-Goldboom explores the shared conceptual foundations of these two arts, examining their theological, musical, architectural, and historical interconnections. A performance of the consecration motet along with a courtly chanson will bring Dufay’s multifaceted music to life.

Gerhardt Müller-Goldboom works as a composer and conductor. Following his studies in composition, musicology, and double bass, he began his career as an instrumentalist, spent several years as a member of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchestras Berlin, and founded the contemporary ensemble "work in progress Berlin," hosting its own series in the Chamber Music Hall of the Philharmonie. After assisting Kent Nagano, he began conducting music theater productions in 2003. His compositions are featured regularly at international contemporary music festivals.

Since its founding in 2003, Vocalconsort Berlin has established itself as one of Germany’s premiere vocal ensembles, appearing in a cappella, concert, and staged productions across Europe's major musical capitals and festivals.
