Paula Fürstenberg: Weltalltage (reading in German)

Paula Fürstenberg, a Wiepersdorf scholarship holder from Brandenburg, reads from her second novel, "Weltalltage" (Space Days).

The two main characters in the book are actually good friends. They spent their childhood together in the East of Germany in the 1990s, live together, and take care of each other. Raised by single mothers who were never there because they had to work all day, they grew up together and went to the West to study and then back to the East.

But then difficult moments arise in their friendship, which have to do with their illnesses. The narrator has had a chronic illness since childhood, and her friend Max suddenly falls ill with depression, even though he was always the “healthy” one. In this challenging situation, the narrator begins to write down their shared history.

With a great deal of humor and warmth, Paula Fürstenberg tells the story of a friendship and its trial by fire in “Weltalltage” (Space Days). She writes about what it means not to function in a world where everything has to function, about the body and how we treat it, and about where empathy begins—and where it must end.
